The spark of FAIR: a new network takes up the struggle for investigative journalism in Africa
One FAIR journalist refused to become a diplomat, because ‘such people used to visit our house with their big and shiny cars, whilst around the corner the people lived in poverty.’ A second resisted the pull of the warlords, who recruited boys from the village for their armies. Later, he would publicly name and shame them, exposing these and other warlords and torturers in his articles and broadcasts. Suzana was fifteen when she knew she wanted to engage in radio programmes for and with the oppressed, and Ken was driven by a passion to develop his country, and African journalism, to be at par with the rest of the world. |

This is a wonderful initiative indeed, more so when it is free of charge. We African journalists are facing a lot of constraints ranging from logistics, veteran mentoring and above all, finance.
